The first annual national day for truth and reconciliation, a statutory holiday commemorating the tragic legacy of residential schools in Canada, will be held on Sept. 30. The move follows the discovery of 215 children’s remains on the grounds of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia. Flags on all federal buildings were lowered to half-mast to honour those who died “and all Indigenous children who never made it home, the survivors and their families,” said Prime Minister Trudeau. Trudeau also said residential school survivors will receive more support as he, along with Indigenous leaders, acknowledged that this was not an isolated incident.
- Ryerson University’s school of journalism plans to rename two publications to remove the reference to Egerton Ryerson, who it says was “indisputably” one of the architects of the residential school system.
- Calgary’s Board of Education has passed a motion to rename Langevin School, whose namesake was also considered an architect of residential schools.
